Social Media Guidelines

Advertising Articles, New and Old.

New articles and other content posted to the website should be advertised on social media the same day it is uploaded to the website. It will be the responsibility of the Editor who posts the new article on the website to notify the Comms Officer of it; the Comms Officer will then be responsible for advertising the new content that same day.

Tweets advertising new articles should summarize their content and/or pull some “highlight” quotes. Single tweets are preferred to threads for advertising new articles.

Tweets advertising new articles should be retweeted the day after they’re posted, perhaps multiple times (the decision is left to the Comms Officer). Quote tweets that re-advertise the content (rather than simple retweets) would be considered a plus, but aren’t required.

Weekly Output Goals

On four days per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday) the sitting Comms Officer will write and post one three-tweet thread — “novel posts” — on a “current event” of relevance to revolutionary politics.

This four-per-week schedule is the minimum. Maintaining this minimum will be the responsibility of the Comms Officer, and also may be exceeded at their discretion.

As a rule of thumb, these novel posts should prioritize topics which contributors will not have time to write full articles on. Examples might include instances of police brutality or civilian-fascist violence, instances of imperialist aggression, or new reactionary legislation. These “novel posts” should be exemplified by a clearly Marxist-Leninist perspective that markedly differs from liberal and otherwise non-Marxist views on the event in question. The “point” should be snappy, readily understandable, and repeatable.

The Comms Officer should prepare a given day’s thread the night before or morning of, and post by around 6:00 p.m. (EST) that evening.

Additionally, twice per week (on a day of the Comms Officer’s choosing), a general call for articles should be made. The Editors should prepare a list of guidelines that can be used by the Comms Officer to easily produce new calls.

Daily Output Goals

At least one social media post advertising content on the website (and linking to it) should be posted per day, regardless of whether new content has been published. On “off” days (i.e., when no new content has been published to the website), old content, especially long-form articles that aren’t so dependent on “current events,” may be advertised. Other content, such as the Glossary, may also be advertised. The point is to show that we’re always hard at work, even when the work isn’t ready yet, and to keep traffic going.
