Using the Action Log

What actions need to be logged?
  • All changes to Unity–Struggle–Unity Press published materials. This includes all content in our periodicals, “standalone” content, and official statements (e.g., EB minutes, financial statements, published EB decisions, our prospectus, etc.), on our website, in digital files we produce, and in print.
  • Publication of new content.
  • All changes to our shared Google Drive folders (i.e., all under the folder named Unity–Struggle–Unity), such as reorganization of files, and all changes to internal (that is, unpublished) PressOrg documents (e.g., this SOP document).
  • Changes to our Discord server. This includes inviting and kicking server guests and creating and deleting channels.
  • External communications conducted in an official capacity that could reasonably be considered an action taken on behalf of the Press as an organization and its membership as a collective. For example, if a Pressworker invites someone to submit an article, or to join our Discord server, or to conduct an interview, or to partner with us, or to distribute the Clarion, etc., that should be logged. For a counterexample, if a Pressworker casually discusses some Press content with someone, or answers a question about how the Press operates, etc., there’s no need to log this.
  • All expenditures of PressOrg funds, including routine expenditures.
How to log…

Briefly describe the action and the approximate time (clock and date; use whatever format you prefer) it was taken.

For some examples:

  • Fixed several typos and corrected two factual errors [article] at [time] on [day], [DD-MM-YYYY].
  • Invited Twitter user [@], who is a member of [org] to submit an article for the Clarion at [time] on [day], [DD-MM-YYYY].
  • Kicked [username] from the server for [reason] at [time] on [day], [DD-MM-YYYY]..
  • Received criticism concerning an article from [individual] on [service] at [time] on [day], [DD-MM-YYYY]. Replied to the effect that I will show criticism to EB for consideration at [time] on [day], [DD-MM-YYYY].

Follow-up actions should be logged by “replying” to the previous action (or, if there were multiple previous actions, by replying to the latest one).

Asking for clarification about a log item…

If a log item is insufficiently clear, make a thread underneath the log item to ask for clarification. Remember to close the thread once the issue is resolved.

This is also the place to post screenshots of messages, the website, etc. — rather than clogging up the #action-log channel.

Taking issue with a logged action…

All PressOrg members have the right to criticize an action taken by an Editor and to demand that additional actions be taken. Criticisms may be voiced anywhere, but for the sake of tidiness, one of the following two places is preferred:

  • A thread underneath the #action-log item for the action in question.
  • A thread in the #pressorg-forum channel that links to the #action-log item.
