Step 1: HEADLINE

All articles need a descriptive headline.

  • Authors may suggest headlines for their articles, and the Editors should take the author’s suggestion into consideration, but the Editorial Board reserves the right to write its own headline.
    • Specifically, The Editor who posts the article has the authority to write its headline.
  • For current events articles, the headline should (usually, with some exceptions) be descriptive of the event in question.
  • For coverage of events in a specific city, state, province, etc., the headline should note the place.
    • Examples:
      • North Carolina Supreme Court Crushes Democratic Voting Rights
      • Hollywood Studios Escalate Class Warfare
      • Washington, D.C.: Police Lieutenant Charged with Aiding “Proud Boys” Terrorists in 2021 Assault on Capitol Hill
      • A Lynching in New York City: White Supremacist Vigilante Murders Homeless Black Man on Subway — with NYPD Endorsement
  • When we republish statements from unions and other organizations, the headline should reflect this.
    • Examples:
      • Press Release: Wrongfully Accused and Exonerated University Employee Launches American Justice Project to Expose and Rectify Inequities in the Justice System
      • New School Students Occupy University Center Until Union Demands Are Met
      • Baltimore Student Union Responds to City’s Brazen Hostility

Step 2: URL

Slugs should include the date, followed by descriptive words.

  • Dates should be formatted yyyy-mm-dd.
  • Limit to 5 words (preferably fewer) following the date in the URL.

Step 3: CATEGORY

All articles need a format, geographic, and topical category.

Format categories are found in the menu under the newspaper icon (/all-content/ link).

  • Choose only one format category per article.

Geographic categories are found in the menu under the globe icon (/global/ link), and include North America, regions thereof, and “international”, also divided by region.

  • Choose only one geographic category, unless multiple must be applied.
  • Note: DO NOT sort “Poetry” and “Book Reviews” by geography.

Topical categories can be found in the menu under the tag icon (/content-tags/ link).

  • Choose up to three topical categories for each article — the fewer, the better. Only select a topical category if that is one of the article’s main focuses.
  • The point of these categories is to provide a catalog of articles relating in the main to the tag in question.

General notes on categories…

  • Remember to select the “All Content” category for all articles, regardless of format, geography, or topic, to provide a full catalog of articles published in the Clarion
    • Exception: EB statements are not marked “All Content”.
  • Assigning a subcategory automatically assigns its parent category, so DO NOT select both.
    • Example: Do not select both “Regional” and “New England”.

Step 4: EXCERPT

All articles need an excerpt, either summarizing or adapted from the text.

  • In-house articles should be provided with excerpts from their respective authors, but an Editor may craft one if it hasn’t been provided.
  • “Adapted” means NOT word-for-word copied from the text and but taken from the text, modified to fit a “lede”, true to the article’s tone and the author’s voice.
  • Excerpts must be fewer than 30 words long.
  • Suggestion: Use a rhetorical question, a memorable passage, or a snappy summary.

Step 5: IMAGE

Select an image that matches the article’s content.

  • The Editor who posts the article has the authority to select an image, but Editors should make a habit of asking the author for a preferred image.
  • For current events, a relevant photograph would be optimal.
  • Do not use photographs that depict brutality against the oppressed.
  • Do not choose grotesque, needlessly disturbing, or sexually explicit images.
